Anna Hawes

April 30, 1946 — August 7, 2023

Anna Hawes, 77, of Lawrenceville, IL, formerly of Robinson, IL, passed away on August 7, 2023, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born on April 30, 1946 to parents Ernest E. Collins and DeElda (Colvin) Collins and grew up together with step-father Alvia Burton "Eddie" Collins, all of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Everette Collins, Rhoda M. (Collins) Fitts, and Alvia "Bimbo" Collins, and her son, Gerald "Ernie" Lucas.  She is survived her loving husband, Richard "Bud" Hawes. Her legacy lives on through her children, Lawrence "Larry" Lucas, Sabra Snow, Micheal "Denny" Snow, and Richard "Ricky" Hawes; her grandchildren, Diana (Lucas) Murdock, Jorden Snow, Jessica Johnson, Beth Lucas, Jess Collins, Savannah Hudson, Kyra Hudson, Alex Lucas, Lance Lucas, Nate Crump, Tyson Lucas, Sierra Snow, Phillip Snow, Cody Snow, Levi Lucas, Tristen Snow, Ashley Lucas, Cheyanna Snow, Lorelai West, Charlotte Hawes, and Rocky Hawes; her great-grandchildren, Parkker Collins, Christopher Snow, Cayden Collins, Allison Johnson, Lillian Wolf, Declan Collins, Avyn Lucas, Cameron Lopes, Jace Hudson, Axl Lucas, Mykka Collins, Madelyn Lopes, Layla Dart, Link Snow, Jackson Murdock, Averie Crary, Phillip R. Snow, Shawn Talley, and Nicoli Snow; and her great-great-grandchild, Skyye Collins. She is also survived by her sister, Ellen Fitts, and many nieces and nephews, each of whom carries with them countless precious memories of this dear soul.

Anna stepped into motherhood at the young age of 16 and from then on, demonstrated an unrivaled resilience and commitment to her children. She worked diligently at the Brown's Shoe Factory in Vincennes, IN, and later at Ettelbrick in Robinson, where she was revered for her hard work, eventually attaining the position of inspector. For a time, she was also part of the production team at Victor Dana. Though she always took pride in her work, Anna's heart was always drawn to the care of the aged and the elderly, and she spent several years devoted to their care. She found great joy and satisfaction in this role, often being a comforting presence to them in their final days. She was also an energetic partner in her husband Bud's endeavors, helping with painting and cleaning jobs, and always seemed to stay busy. This was particularly true at home, where she spent innumerable hours in the kitchen. A skillful cook, her potato salad in particular was the stuff of local legend! This inherent gift was passed on to her children, who remember their mom as a feisty, no-nonsense lady whose love for them could move mountains. Though she was a fierce defender of her loved ones, this mother hen was unafraid to lay down the law and tell it like it was. She lived life on her own terms and filled her 77 years with boldness, beauty, the color blue, and a whole lot of Bingo! In fact, one of the most treasured trips of her life found her and her sister Ellen playing Bingo all the way to an Indian Reservation, where they continued to play before packing up to (you guessed it) play Bingo all the way back home. At home, her TV was glued to Channel 10, which was home to some of her favorite soaps, programs like The Young and the Restless and As the World Turns.

For those who loved her, Anna's passing has made it feel as if the world has stopped turning. After all, her tenacious spirit was the driving force that propelled her family forward. As we peer ahead into the unknown, may we do so with a sense of thanksgiving, knowing that the gift of her memory will continue to teach us how to live and how to love until that sweet day when we meet again.
