Leslie “Les” Carter, 73, of rural Flat Rock died at 11:09 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2015 in the comfort of his home. He was born November 30, 1941 in Mt. Erie, IL, the son of Leslie & Ornetta Barnhart Carter, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother Darrel Carter and by his sister, Eleanor Burnett. He married Nancy Jo Aten Weger on May 9, 1974, and she survives. He is also survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Jeff & Rachael Weger (Robinson, IL); his daughter, Jana & Jason Coonce (Robinson, IL); his grandchildren, Marisa Coonce, Lexi Weger, Gracie Weger, and Emma Weger; his brothers, Floyd & Gerry Carter (Dundas, IL) and Ralph Carter (Claremont, IL); his brothers-in-law, Dave & Diana Aten, Jess Newbold, and Gary Fasig; as well as several nieces and nephews. Les was a 1960 graduate of Cisne High School in Cisne, IL. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Back home, he drove a tank truck for a time before becoming Chief of Police in Oblong. He went on to become a patrolman for the Robinson Police Department and deputy for the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department before giving up the badge to farm and raise cattle. Away from the farm, he enjoyed drinking coffee and shooting the breeze with anybody and everybody, having never met a stranger. He also enjoyed spending time at the cattle sale barn in Vincennes. He was a member of the Oblong Masonic Lodge #644 and the Robinson American Legion Post #69. He will be remembered for the love he had for his granddaughters. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Masonic rites will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8th at the funeral home with Ron Price officiating the service. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Palestine along with military rites. Memorials may be made to the ACE After School Program, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
