John C. Boyd

August 30, 1960 — December 19, 2024

John C. Boyd, 64, of Palestine, IL, passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 19, 2024. A man of curiosity, ingenuity, and heart, John's life was filled with the connections he built, the skills he mastered, and the love he shared with his family. Born on August 30, 1960, in Lawrenceville, IL, to Rev. Robert Charles Boyd & Bernice (Knoblett) Boyd, John spent his formative years moving across the Midwest as his father pastored various congregations. These experiences shaped his ability to adapt and connect with people from all walks of life. He eventually settled in Robinson, IL, where he graduated with the RHS Class of 1978. John married his best friend, Lauralee Nine, on May 2, 1981, in a ceremony officiated by his father. Together, they built a life rooted in love and laughter, cherishing their roles as parents to their two greatest joys, Miranda and Brandon.

A self-taught electronics technician and systems engineer, John's career spanned decades and diverse roles. From working in his uncle's local electronics shop to Circuit City in North Carolina, John's expertise and people skills often led to unexpected encounters. While making house calls, he met Frances Bavier, beloved for her role as Aunt Bea on The Andy Griffith Show . In a later chapter of his career at Sigcom, he earned a commendation from a general at the Pentagon for his work and even crossed paths with Colin Powell during his time there. Whether he was fixing circuit boards or solving complex systems issues, John's work left a mark on people from all walks of life. He could fix anything with wires, circuits, or cables, earning him a reputation as an electrical genius. His natural aptitude was balanced by relentless determination and a hands-on approach to learning. John's passions extended beyond his career. He had a deep love for photography, capturing everyday beauty in flowers, wildlife, and candid family moments. His grandchildren, Teagan and Myra, were often the beneficiaries of his various snapshots.

Above all, John's love for music defined much of his life and relationships. Left-handed but determined, he taught himself to play on right-handed guitars, a testament to his resourcefulness and passion. Music was a language he spoke fluently, connecting with others through impromptu jam sessions at family gatherings. His musical roots ran deep, nurtured by a family that shared this passion, and it was a joy he passed down to his children, especially Brandon. One of John's proudest moments was selling his own prized bass guitar to help Brandon pursue his love of music. Watching his son play that day remains a cherished memory, a moment when John's joy was mirrored in his son's growing passion. It was evident that music was more than a hobby to John—it was a way to express the inexpressible, to celebrate life, and to bring people together. Whether strumming his guitar, playing bass, or simply listening to music with loved ones, he found joy and connection in every note. His love for music was a reflection of the way he lived his life: with heart.

Though John had a heart for animals, he expressed it in his own unique way. While he claimed to dislike cats, they seemed to gravitate toward him, sensing his soft spirit. After all, he was a kind and loving man, eager to help others, even when it wasn't the logical choice. This selfless and compassionate way of life reflected his many years of walking by faith. Though he wrestled with God at times, as many do, it was a testament to the authenticity of his relationship with his Lord. Now, the struggles and burdens of this life have given way to eternal rest, and those who love him can take comfort in the knowledge that he is home with Lauralee and his Savior, where joy and love endure forever.

In addition to his wife of nearly 40 years, John was also preceded in death by his father, Rev. Robert "Bob" Boyd, three brothers, Timothy, Michael, and Mark Boyd, and his maternal and paternal grandparents. John is survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Miranda (Boyd) & Anthony Calandro; his son, Brandon Boyd; his two grandchildren, Teagan and Myra Calandro; his mother, Bernice Boyd; his in-laws, Archie & Karen Nine; one brother, Matt Boyd; his sister, Susan Brady; his sisters-in-law, Mary Beth Boyd and Donna Brittain; his brothers-in-law, Dennis Brady and Joe Nine; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
