Jerry "Jake" O'Dell, 72, of Hutsonville, IL, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, in the comfort of his home. Born in Crawford County on April 10, 1951, Jake's journey through life was marked by a profound joy for music, a love for classic cars, and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends. He grew up in Robinson, IL, where his lifelong passion for music was evident from an early age. After graduating from Robinson High School, he held a variety of roles throughout his career with companies such as Fair-Rite and Lexel, but his passion and crowning achievement was owning and operating Jake's Body Shop in Hutsonville from 1982 to 1994. His presence at the shop was more than just a professional calling; it was a hub where friends and customers alike experienced his affability and infectious sense of humor.
Jake's love for old cars transcended beyond his professional life and became a defining hobby, as he became a familiar face at local car shows, sharing stories and laughter with fellow enthusiasts. He was also a lover of road trips, having seen much of the continental U.S. over the course of innumerable trips throughout his life. Back home, Jake could often be found at "Bobo's Pond" with a fishing rod in hand, enjoying the serenity of nature and the simple pleasure of a good catch. As a member of the Robinson Masonic Lodge, Jake connected with his community, embracing the values of brotherhood and charity. His outgoing nature naturally made him a social butterfly, effortlessly drawing people with his friendly demeanor.
In remembering Jake, one finds it impossible to choose just one adjective to describe his multifaceted personality; he was as warm as he was wise and as funny as he was friendly. His advice felt fatherly, his companionship brotherly, and his love unconditional. As we consider the fullness of his 72 years on earth, we acknowledge that this world was brighter with him in it. His was a life well-lived, filled with the melodious laughter of a man who cherished each day and everyone who was a part of his journey. Though he has left us, the echoes of his loving spirit and friendly demeanor will remain in the lives of those who knew him, a symphony of cherished memories that will play on into eternity.
He is survived by his daughters & sons-in-law, Darla O'Dell & Nick Atencio and Laura & Shawn Griffin; by his grandson, Shawn & Candice Newlin; by his great-grandchildren, Rhett and Riley; by his siblings, Lulu Finney, Jean Parkes, Donna Binder, Bill O'Dell, Darlene Schuchmann, Gary O'Dell, and Twyla Boa; as well as several nieces and nephews.
