Harold Alonzo Bond departed this life on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the Aldie Caring Center, Aldie, VA. He was born November 23, 1932 and raised in the Oblong area, the son of Matthew and Gertie (Battershell) Bond. He graduated from Oblong High School in 1951. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from 1953 to 1955. He married Nona Carol Moore (Robinson, IL) in 1955. He attended E.I.U., where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany with a minor in Zoology. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Mycology from University of North Carolina. He was an environmental scientist from 1958 to 1978 before being detailed to U.S. EPA Management in Washington, D.C. He retired from the U.S. Public Health Services 1991. He is survived by his son, H. Brad Bond (WA) and a daughter, Trudy Bond (Front Royal, VA). He is also survived locally by three sisters & brothers-in-law, Josephine & Roy Weck, Elizabeth & Ron Maxwell and Martha & Larry Dennis; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Laura & Tom Rich; by his brothers, Donald (in infancy), John Bond, and Paul & Betty Bond; as well as his wife of 61 years, Nona. A combined graveside service for Harold & Nona will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 3:00 PM at the Robinson New Cemetery with Brother Bill Ikemire officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the donor’s choice, with envelopes available at the cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is in charge of arrangements.
